Wailuku, HI (November 8, 2019) — Maui AIDS Foundation will recognize World AIDS Day 2019 on Sunday, December 1, at the VFW Hall, 1136 Uluniu Rd, Kihei, HI 96753 . The event will be from 2:00pm until 5:00pm and will be free for the general public. Parking is free, refreshments and entertainment will be provided.
This year marks the 31st anniversary of World AIDS Day (#WAD2019), which takes place on the first day of December each year worldwide. The day is recognized as the first ever global health day for people to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
Established in 1987 as Maui County’s only AIDS Service Organization, Maui AIDS Foundation provides services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS along with outreach, education and screening for local communities at risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme is #CommunitiesMakeTheDifference. World AIDS Day offers an important platform to highlight the role of communities. The strong advocacy role played by communities is needed more than ever to ensure that AIDS remains on the political agenda that human rights are respected and that decision-makers and implementers remain active in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

To say that we are humbled would be a huge understatement; we were elated to find that we had been nominated as part of USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards, as one of the 20 Best Boat Tours in the US, but when the results came in we were floored to find out we had been voted #5 on the list! We would like to say thank you for standing behind us and for supporting us in all the ways that you do. It is wonderful to know that our Aloha Spirit Service, Kauai-built boats, our amazing staff and community outreach has a place in your heart!
Since our beginning in 1997, we have been striving every day to be unconditionally accepted island wide as the best all-around boat tour company on Kauai, and that applies to all aspects of the company. For us “BEST” is defined as:
- Being the best company to be a part of and work for.
- Providing the highest degree of quality customer service available in the industry.
- Maintaining the best vessels and equipment on the island.
- Providing the safest, most unique and memorable ocean experience available.
- Providing a solidly positive impact on both our ocean resources and our island community.
Holo Holo was founded with a simple idea: build amazing, high speed boats that can take Kauai’s challenging ocean conditions in stride and deliver guests to remote and dramatic locations like the Napali Coast, Kipu Kai, Lehua Crater, and Niihau; combine that with an exceptional staff that’s focused on giving our passengers a first-class experience, and we’ve found a recipe for success.
We love to support Hawaii Ecotourism Association’s principles of sustainable tourism, are proud to be the only company on Kauai certified by NOAA as Dolphin SMART, and are delighted to have received the Ocean Friendly Restaurant certification by Surfrider in 2018. We are constantly challenging ourselves to provide the best experience, in the most efficient and sustainable way possible.
Our approach to weather, the environment, and our ‘ohana is to be as transparent as possible. The goal is to set realistic expectations of our vessels, routes, and ever-changing conditions from the get-go. It is a simple communication that helps to establish a relationship with anyone joining us and help prepare them for the adventure of a lifetime!
For years we have made it a point to haul dangerous derelict fishing nets out of the ocean. Ghost nets and ropes are the number one cause of injury to whales and many other sea mammals. We are happy to partner with the Kauai Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to help dispose of these properly and will continue to run our tours with an ocean-friendly approach.
We are doing our best to lead the way when it comes to promoting environmental stewardship and quality education in the tourism community. We’ve recently launched the Holo Holo Pono Pledge, a place for visitors and local island residents alike to commit to traveling responsibly and protecting the precious resources of Kauai. Please visit www.holoholopono.com to learn more and take the Pledge!
If you are considering joining us, know that we will gladly provide all you need for an epic day on the water, including food, drinks, reef-safe sunscreen, history, legends and Aloha Spirit Service! We hope to see you out on the water soon!
Mahalo from all of us here at Holo Holo Charters!

Nearly 2,000 Christians from around the world had signed on to Christians United: A Statement In Support of LGBT+ Inclusion in the Church on Thursday morning, including more than 300 denominational leaders, theologians, and Christian influencers.
San Diego, CA: Nearly 2,000 Christians from around the world had signed on to Christians United: A Statement In Support of LGBT+ Inclusion in the Church on Thursday morning, including more than 300 denominational leaders, theologians, and Christian influencers.
Christians United is an international theological statement bringing together thousands of LGBT+ affirming Christians to declare with one voice that the Church of Jesus Christ must be a place where LGBT+ people are celebrated and embraced. Christians United came as a direct response to The Nashville Statement, a document composed and signed by 150 major evangelical leaders in August 2017, which reaffirmed toxic, non-affirming theological commitments that have caused verifiable harm to countless LGBT+ people of faith around the world.
The statement was originally drafted by LGBT+ Christian activist and Nomad Partnerships Executive Director, Brandan Robertson and was edited by a distinguished editorial board including Dr. J. R. Daniel Kirk, Bishop Joseph Tolton, Rev. Steve Chalke, and Dr. Paula Williams.
Article 1 of the statement begins by declaring:
“WE AFFIRM that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and that the great diversity expressed in humanity through our wide spectrum of unique sexualities and gender identities is a perfect reflection of the magnitude of God’s creative work.”
In the first twenty-four hours of it’s release, Christians United was signed on to by over 1,000 Christians from around the world, including top theologians and the leaders of some of the worlds most influential Christian denominations.
Christians United stands as a faithful witness that a new day is dawning in Christianity, a day in which the Church of Jesus Christ repents of its sin of exclusion, and swings open it’s doors to welcome all of God’s diverse children.

Some Great Upcoming Local Art Events
MAUI HANDS OF LAHAINA PRESENTS: WATERCOLOR ARTIST, LUANA KAMA Every Tuesday in February from 4:30-7:30pm at Maui Hands Gallery 612 Front Street Lahaina, HI 96761
COME WATCH LUANA WORK ON ONE OF HER NEWEST WORKS OF ART.
“My name is Luana Kama and I love to paint! I enjoy painting with watercolor… I find it fascinating to see the pigments and water flow on paper. My favorite subjects to paint are people and flowers.
I started taking classes several years ago when I became semi-retired. I had a wonderful teacher and found myself falling in love with watercolor painting and the various techniques that can be used to get different effects. I have not stopped painting since and still take classes. I have done commission work and have paintings on sale at Maui Hands Lahaina. I have lived in Lahaina most of my life and attended Kamehameha III School and Lahainaluna High School. I am part Hawaiian on my mom’s side and “Haole” on my dad’s side. I have always loved art and did take classes throughout my life but when I got married and started to raise my family (5 boys), drawing and painting were pushed to the side. Today, I’m still living in Lahaina and having a great time painting like crazy. My other interests are sewing, reading, cooking and baking, crafts, and I take classes and teach Hula.”
MAUI HANDS OF LAHAINA PRESENTS: PHOTOGRAPHER, SANDRA GREENBERG Every Sunday in February from 10AM – 6PM at Maui Hands Gallery 612 Front Street Lahaina, HI 96761
A COLLECTION OF HER PHOTOGRAPHS FROM AROUND THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS WILL BE ON DISPLAY.
A Native New Yorker, Sandra had the opportunity to see the world from a multicultural vantage point, one she has always valued. That was one of the reasons Sandra and her husband finally settled down in Maui in 2007, after spending every summer on the island since 1990. Maui was the perfect island. Sandra studied painting and photography at Cooper Union in NYC and Art Therapy at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. It wasn’t until she came to Maui was she able to put some of that knowledge to use after 36 years as an educator. Spending time with the whales and honu brought her peace and awe at the wonders of nature, thus, creating the inspiration to photograph the beauty and movement of these animals in their environment. The journey started with her best friend and husband Martin, but the stars have her continuing with her faithful dog Mana.

NGLCC Releases Historic
“America’s LGBT Economy” Report,
Suggests LGBT Businesses Add
$1.7 Trillion to US Economy and
Create Tens of Thousands of Jobs Nationwide
|
|
National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce snapshot of
Certified LGBT Business Enterprises® (LGBTBEs) explores powerful economic contributions to America across all business sectors
|
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, has released the first-ever snapshot demonstrating the economic and social impact of America’s LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs. The America’s LGBT Economy report explores the revenues, types, sizes and geography of LGBT-owned businesses currently certified by NGLCC, as well as the number of jobs they create and the personal narratives of successful LGBT business owners who reflect the very best about America’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
Bob Witeck of certified LGBTBE Witeck Communications helped prepare this landmark report. Witeck’s works has helped give voice to the LGBT community and our annual spending power. Now he has helped NGLCC produce the first look at our economic impact as a business community.
“The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be able to evidence, through this report, what we’ve observed since our founding fifteen years ago — that America’s LGBT business owners are driving our economy upward and deserve every opportunity to keep creating jobs and innovating our industries. The estimated 1.4 million LGBT business owners NGLCC advocates for have truly earned a place at the equality table,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & President Justin Nelson. “If you are an LGBT business owner and not yet certified, you’re leaving opportunities on the table to help your business and our economy grow. For the LGBT community, this also means we are missing out on more accurate data, role models, job creator, and future success stories that prove ‘If you can buy it, a Certified LGBTBE can supply it.'”
“These numbers tell the real story,” said Bob Witeck, President of Witeck Communications, a certified LGBTBE that served as the analyst for this report. “While our community’s $917 billion spending power highlights our market clout, the jobs, tax revenues and profits we create as employers and entrepreneurs define our full economic value to America. We are just beginning to scratch the surface of our potential.”
“At NGLCC, we have nearly 200 corporate and government partners that understand not only the value of the LGBT dollar, but the economic imperative of inclusivity and LGBT visibility in their supply chains and marketplace. This groundbreaking report proves our NGLCC philosophy that economic visibility, just like social visibility, is essential in building a diverse and inclusive society,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & CEO Chance Mitchell.

WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which finally recognized marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans as a constitutional right. The Leadership Conference submitted an amicus brief in this case in favor of marriage equality:
“This is a transformative day in American history. Today is the day that our nation’s highest court acknowledged the full dignity of LGBT Americans to love and build a family as equals in our society.
While today’s ruling ushers in a new era of acceptance and family security for LGBT Americans, it also highlights the blunt denial of basic rights – in access to employment, housing, public accommodations, education, and credit—that are still being denied in too many states across the nation.
Just as the Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia, which held that state laws prohibiting interracial marriage were unconstitutional, was a forerunner to marriage equality for LGBT people, our nation must also adopt a comprehensive nationwide law to give LGBT Americans the same protections that are already established for people of color, women, religious minorities, and people with disabilities.
Civil rights can only be measured by a single yardstick and our nation can no longer settle for piecemeal solutions to the second-class citizenship of LGBT Americans.”
Wade Henderson is president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its 200-plus member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
