We here at Go Gay Hawaii are elated at the recent civil union legalization in Hawaii, joining other states like New York, Vermont and Delaware. It is, by far, one of the biggest triumphs for the LGBT community, locally and worldwide.
As anticipated, the enactment of this law is also expected to favorably impact island businesses that serve mainland and international visitors. A recent article in the USA Today profiles hotels that are offering incentives to same-sex couples that are visiting to take part in civil union ceremonies in “civil union states”. From exclusive packages to iPad giveaways, many businesses are launching aggressive marketing programs to attract the LGBT consumer.
Some in the community are seeing this as a critical step towards equality but others question the true LGBT acceptance of these businesses and cry possible exploitation.
